DMD/PhD Students
Meet the exceptional students in our DMD/PhD program who are training to become future leaders in academic dental research. These outstanding individuals are balancing rigorous clinical training with cutting-edge biomedical research to advance oral health science.
Current DMD/PhD Students
DMD/PhD student
Heba El-Ahmad
Heba, a UF BS/DMD graduate, investigated Porphyromonas gingivalis vesicles and explored links between the oral microbiome and squamous cell carcinoma.
She champions microbial literacy through STEM outreach to refugee youth, teaches undergraduate laboratories, and aspires to become a clinician‑scientist.
DMD/PhD student
Madison Hersch
Madi, a Fort Myers native and FGCU Psychology‑Neuroscience alumna, mastered neurophysiology, organic chemistry, and microbiology labs investigating zebrafish neurotoxicity, biodiesel protocols, and antibiotic‑resistant Staphylococcus strains while serving as a TA and Pre‑Dental Society board member.
Now in UFCD’s DMD/PhD program, she explores Cryptococcus‑microglial interactions, aiming to blend clinical dentistry with rigorous research and education.
dmd/phd student
Kyle Kasparian
Kyle, graduated from Suma Cum Laude DePaul Biological Sciences, blends molecular neuroscience of APOE‑driven neuroinflammation with business acumen to probe the links between periodontal disease and Alzheimer’s, aiming to become a clinician‑scientist devoted to research, education, and clinical care.
dmd/phd student
Kyra Martin
Kyra, a Ypsilanti‑born DePauw biochemistry graduate, has studied zebrafish heart regeneration, tested synthetic glucocorticoids in house sparrows, examined DNA‑repair pathways in head‑and‑neck cancer, and recently characterized oxidative‑stress genes in Streptococcus mutans. Bringing together this research breadth and her teaching experience, she aspires to become a clinician‑scientist devoted to research, education, and clinical care.
