National Institutes of Health (NIH) Rankings

The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR) NIH rankings include award data from all NIH Institutes. Although the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR )is the College’s primary source of sponsored funding, the college also receives awards from other NIH agencies such as Institutes for Aging, Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and Allergies and Infectious Disease. Data contained in the BRIMR award files was obtained from the NIH’s Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT). (The NIH award funding for this data does not include individual sub-recipient agreements awarded as part of a larger consortium.)

The college receives an average of 15.5 million dollars in sponsored funding per year. Approximately 98% of UFCD sponsored funding derives from external sources: with internal programs supporting 2%. Of the 98% in external funding, 89% comes from federal sponsors such as the NIH, Health Resource and Service Administration (HRSA), the Department of Defense (DOD) and NASA. As shown in the chart below, NIH sponsored approximately 83% of the federal funding with 54% of NIH funding coming from NIDCR in FY 2021. Overall 45% of UFDC’s sponsored funding is received from NIDCR.
Dentistry Awards

The UFCD Office of Research provides funding for several programs which facilitate the submission of proposals to external sources, and provides support for obtaining sponsored research funding. Over the past ten years, a $4.3-million-dollar investment of internal funds yielded over $42-million-dollars in external funding.
