Seung Jin (James) Jang
Biography: James was born in South Korea, but grew up in Gainesville, Florida. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Florida where he majored in Interdisciplinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Prior to joining the DMD/PhD program at UF, he worked in multiple laboratories at National Institutes of Health. First, he joined the lab of Dr. Lothar Hennighausen studying histone methylation catalyzed by MLL4 in mammary tissue during pregnancy. Afterwards, he worked in the lab of Dr. Adrian Wiestner assisting in IGHV sequencing in CLL patients, and later joined the lab of Dr. Swee Lay Thein, investigating the NETosis of Neutrophils in Sickle Cell Disease. During his time at NIH, he regularly attended NIDCR rounds and was inspired by NIDCR scientists and their research work. While not working in the lab, he served as the president of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at his Catholic Church. Every fifth Saturday of the year, he and his friends from the church and NIH served lunch meals to over one hundred homeless people and provided dental supplies to homeless shelters in Washington D.C.
Currently, he has been working in Dr. Zsolt Toth’s laboratory as a DMD/PhD student, where he investigates the role of viral interferon regulatory factors in Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection of oral epithelial cells. During his free time, he enjoys scuba diving in Florida springs and beaches, as well as camping and hiking in the Georgia mountains.
